Read Across America was developed in honor of Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.

Here are a few things you probably didn’t know about Dr. Seuss:

  • He won the Pulitzer Prize, three Academy Awards, and was the author and illustrator of 44 children’s books.

  • His publisher read a report on illiteracy among children. It suggested that the problem was because children’s books were too boring. The Publisher then gave Mr. Geisel a list of words he felt were important for children to learn. Using 220 of these words, Dr. Seuss created “The Cat in The Hat”.
